EDMONTON – To say Alberta guard
Brandon Meiklejohn was red hot would be an understatement. The fifth-year Bear dropped a career-high 41 points, including a Bears record 10 three-pointers in an 89-74 win over UNBC on Friday night at Saville Centre.
Meiklejohn scored 23 of his 41 in the fourth quarter, including six of his 3's, as Alberta broke a 59-59 tie after 30 minutes of play.
His 41 points are the third most ever for a Golden Bear, and the most since Rick Stanley scored 44 in 1990. Doug Baker's 48-point performance in 1977 still stands as the Alberta record. Meiklejohn's three-point total is also the second most in Canada West history.
Lars Ishimwe added 15 for Alberta, with
Isaac Simon adding 12, as the Bears improved to 3-2 this season with the win. The Bears outscored UNBC 30-15 in the final frame, with 23 of those 30 coming from Meiklejohn.
Evgeny Baukin led the Timberwolves with 23 points, with the second-year forward finishing 9/13 from the field. Fellow sophomore Justin Sunga added 12, with 13 coming from Darren Hunter. The loss drops the 'Wolves to 3-2.
Like the women's game before, the visitors held a slim lead early, with the 'Wolves jumping ahead 16-16 early in the second quarter. A late Alberta surge tied the game at 40's at the half.
Along with Meiklejohn's explosion, Alberta was dominant on the glass, finishing with a 51-25 advantage, and a 19-6 edge on offensive rebounds.
To go along with his 15 points, Ishimwe also added a game-high seven assists, many of which set up open Meiklejohn looks in the fourth quarter. As a team, Alberta made 61% of their shots in the fourth, en route to the 15-point win.
Alberta and UNBC will close out their weekend series tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. MT.
