EDMONTON -
Adam Paige scored a game-high 20 points, leading the Golden Bears to a nail-bitting 70-65 win over te UNBC Timberwolves on Saturday night at Saville.Â
Trailing by two entering the fourth, Alberta outscored UNBC 23-16, including 11-5 over the final four minutes to squeak out a 70-65 win. The game saw 16 lead changes and eight ties, with neither side holding a lead of more than seven.Â
Lars Ishimwe added 13 points for the Bears, who improved to 4-2 with the weekend sweep over the 'Wolves. Isaac Simon and Caiden Kushnir added 10 points each for Alberta.Â
Spencer Ledoux led UNBC with a game-high 22 points, going 10/16 from the floor to go along with six boards. All but three of UNBC's points came from their starting five, with Chris Ross adding 13, and Josh Gillespie adding a dozen.Â
The Bears outscored UNBC 17-3 in bench points in the win. The Timberwolves shored up some defensive issues from Friday evening, but left meat on the bone at the other end, shooting 6-for-26 from three, and a regrettable 3-for-11 from the free-throw line.
The teams were deadlocked at 31 at the half, with the visitors holding a slim 49-47 lead after three quarters. A personal five-point run by Ishimwe vaulted the Bears to a four-point lead with less than four minutes to go, putting pressure on a TWolves team facing significant foul trouble. The teams traded baskets, with Alberta clinging to a three-point lead in the final minute.
The Bears would hold on from there, making their necessary free throws and claiming a precarious five-point win over the TWolves.
Alberta will visit Calgary next weekend to close out 2023.
