Bears open season with dominant road win

Alberta cruises past MRU 6-1

The Mount Royal University men's hockey team fell to the University of Alberta Golden Bears 6-1 on Friday night at Flames Community Arena.

Prior to the game, Cougars assistant coach Tyler Fiddler participated in a ceremonial puck drop to recognize National Truth and Reconciliation Day. All members of the Cougars coaching staff wore orange t-shirts to commemorate the day.

The first period was a tight battle between the two teams that saw minimal chances and any opportunity shut down was by ALB goalie Nick Schneider and MRU netminder Jackson Berry.

The Cougars went to the powerplay after a hooking call drawn by Spencer Moe.

During their man advantage, Jared Power found Nolan Yaremko in the slot and Yaremko put it past Schneider to give MRU a 1-0 lead in the first.

Andrew Fyten took a penalty late in the first and the Golden Bears would start the second period on the powerplay. ALB was quick to score while up a man. Dawson Davidson got the tying goal for the Golden Bears.

The momentum shifted to ALB, and they had MRU on their heels. Josh Prokop tallied the go-ahead goal later in the second and the Golden Bears finished the second up 2-1 and outshooting MRU 15-9.

The Golden Bears came out blazing in the third with two quick goals from Jakin Smallwood and Ethan Sakowich. Suddenly, ALB had a stranglehold on the game with a 4-1 score.

ALB added two more goals late in the game to finish with a 6-1 score. The Cougars looked depleted and frustrated after a lot of trips to the penalty box. After a tight first half of the game, the Golden Bears took strong control and claimed the win.
