Entering his fourth season as head coach of the three-time national champion Golden Bears Soccer program, Martin Fenger-Andersen has added five recruits to his roster for the 2022 CW season.

Joining the Bears for next season are two defenders, two strikers, and one central midfielder. Four of the five recruits are also Edmonton products, with one from Winnipeg. The crop of recruits will join returning Golden Bear starters Liam Collens, Janko Vong, Jake Bosch, Rilind Idrizi, and David Chung. 

The Golden Bears went 4-1-5 in conference play in 2021, eventually falling to Fraser Valley in the Canada West quarter-final. Alberta is looking for their first CW and U SPORTS title since winning both in 2016.

Habib Assem

"I chose the University of Alberta because of its good reputation, big history and competitive nature not only in the athletics department, but also in its academics department. Even while playing for the Bears I can balance both the academics and athletics so that I can set myself up for success in the future."

Martin Fenger-Andersen:
"Habib is a young striker who has shown a great desire to improve his game over the past year and has worked incredibly hard to earn himself a spot with our program going into 2022. Habib played his youth soccer with Southwest Sting in Edmonton and had an excellent summer with the Green and Gold Men's team in the AMSL, scoring 7 goals in 14 games to date. Habib is a dynamic striker with a great work ethic and has shown great finishing ability in front of goal. I am very happy to have Habib join Golden Bears soccer for the 2022 season."

Thomas Hope

Position: Central Midfield

"I picked the U of A for a few reasons; It is close to home and my family. It is a fantastic school to receive an education from. And it has a historic and successful men's soccer program that I hope to be a part of in the coming years." 

Martin Fenger-Andersen:
"Thomas is a versatile player whose technical ability combined with his fitness, work rate, and competitiveness will make him a good addition to our program. Thomas played his youth soccer with the Edmonton Warriors, and more recently with the Victoria Highlanders program in B.C. Thomas is a strong student and has the quality and desire to be a successful student-athlete and make an impact on and off the field as a member of Golden Bears soccer."

Mahdi Hammoud

Position: Striker, Attacking Midfielder, Left/Right wing

Mahdi Hammoud: 
"I have always been connected to UofA since starting out in youth soccer here in Edmonton. Coach Marty has also coached me through my years here in Edmonton (Juventus Youth). With my existing connections and relationships with players and coaches, it was only right to join the UofA program."

Martin Fenger-Andersen:
"Mahdi is a player we have known for many years as he came through his youth years with Edmonton Juventus Soccer Club and our own Green and Gold Soccer Academy. Mahdi joins us off the back of playing professionally in Germany and will bring a great amount of experience and attacking quality to our forward line. I am excited to have Mahdi join Golden Bears soccer, and look forward to him being an impact player for us in the years to come."

Joel comes from a strong background having played his youth soccer with Internazionale Soccer Club and O'Leary high school where he excelled in the soccer academy and in the classroom. On the field, Joel has a great combination of size and speed, technique on the ball, reads the game well, and is a top competitor which will make him an excellent addition to our defensive unit."

Juan Rea

High School: Oak Park High School, Winnipeg, Manitoba

Juan Rea:
"I chose the University of Alberta because of its great reputation in academics and athletics. I have the intent to play high level soccer while achieving a reputable degree in computing science. The U of Alberta's soccer program operates at a high level and I know I will come out as a better player. The U of A is also one of the top schools in Canada for my field of study. After touring the campus and athletic facilities, I was very impressed by what the U of Alberta has to offer."

Martin Fenger-Andersen:
"Juan joins our program from the Valour FC Academy program in his hometown of Winnipeg. Juan is a wide player with good technical ability and an excellent work rate. Juan is competitive, has a hunger to improve his game, and possesses great characteristics on and off the field which will make him a good addition to the program on the field and in the classroom. I am very happy to have Juan join our squad for the 2022 season."
