EDMONTON, AB - National championship soccer is returning to Foote Field. Next November, the University of Alberta will host the 2027 U SPORTS Men's Soccer Championship, bringing the nation's top collegiate talent to Edmonton for the first time since 2006.

This marks the fourth time the Golden Bears will stage the national tournament, and if history is any indication, local fans are in for a thrilling ride. The Bears captured ultimate glory on home soil in both 1979 and 2006, with a 1981 showcase rounding out their hosting legacy. Now, after more than two decades, the stage is set for the Bears to defend their den and hunt for gold once again.

"We're incredibly excited to bring the U SPORTS Men's Soccer Championship back to Edmonton. Golden Bears soccer has such a proud tradition, and our head coach, Martin Fenger-Andersen continues to build on that legacy," said Director of Athletics, Leah Pezer. "We're looking forward to working again with Explore Edmonton, who consistently helps drive high-impact events in our city, and to welcoming new partners who can help us create a memorable championship and continue putting Edmonton on the soccer map."

Under the leadership of Fenger-Andersen the Golden Bears own a 42-18-24 Canada West record over the past six seasons, winning 59 total games over that span. The Golden Bears have won 11 Canada West and five national titles in program history, winning the double last in 2016. 

The Golden Bears have raced out to a 3-0-1 conference record in 2026, are currently ranked #7 in U SPORTS, and are firmly on an upward trajectory towards hosting nationals next fall. 

"We are honoured to host the 2027 U SPORTS Championship next fall, and will work hard in the coming weeks and months to continue building and developing a team to compete among the top programs in the country," said Martin Fenger-Andersen. "We are excited to engage with the soccer community in Edmonton, with our alumni, and with our students and staff on campus to put on a great tournament."

Alongside a championship-calibre roster, the University of Alberta is renowned for setting the gold standard in hosting marquee events, with Athletics primed to deliver an electric atmosphere marked by a premier student-athlete experience and deep-rooted community engagement.

"Soccer in Edmonton and across Alberta continues to grow, and there is tremendous momentum around the game nationally and internationally. We want to build alongside that momentum," continued Pezer. "Hosting the best teams in the country at Foote Field will be a special opportunity for our student-athletes, alumni, and the entire Edmonton community."

The 2027 U SPORTS Championship will run November 11th to 14th at Foote Field.
