EDMONTON – The Canada West soccer schedule was released on Tuesday, which sees the Golden Bears play 10 conference games, five at home at Foote Field.
The Golden Bears and the MacEwan Griffins will open the season with a home-and-home series, September 25th and 26th in Edmonton. Alberta will also host Mount Royal (Oct. 3), Calgary (Oct. 16 & 17), and Saskatchewan (Oct. 22) at Foote Field this season.
Alberta's first conference game on September 25th will mark their first conference action since their quarter-final loss to UBC on October 25, 2019, after the 2020 season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. The Bears went 5-6-3 in 2019 under head coach Martin Fenger-Andersen.
The start of the Canada West season was pushed back to late September to accommodate a hopeful safe return to amidst ongoing impacts from COVID-19. Prairie division schools will play 10 conferences matches, while Pacific Division programs will play 12.
The Canada West playoffs will begin on October 29th with the quarterfinal round. The 2021 U SPORTS Championship will be hosted by the Carleton Ravens, November 18-21.
All games will be streamed live on Canada West TV, with passes available for purchase in August.
SCHEDULE HIGHLIGHTS
- The Golden Bears will play 10 conference games, compared to 12 for the Pandas.
- Because of the shortened 2021 schedule, the 10 CW games played by the Bears will be their shortest conference schedule since 1998.
- Alberta last won the Canada West and U SPORTS Championship in 2016.
