Bill Humby

  • Title
    Head Coach

On May 17, 2006, Bill Humby was named as the new head coach for Pandas and Golden Bears swimming, replacing two-year coach Sam Montgomery.

In his 25 years of coaching Humby has coached medalists at all levels of National Championships and has attained his Level III NCCP Coaching Certification. He comes to the Golden Bears and Pandas program after spending the last eight years as an assistant coach for the University of Calgary Swim Club/University of Calgary Varsity Dinos. Humby will take over for Sam Montgomery, who served as the Alberta Head Coach for the past two seasons.

His role with the University of Alberta will also include fostering relationships with various swimming organizations in Northern Alberta such as the Edmonton Keyano Swim Club, the Olympian Swim Club and Swim Alberta. By having the Golden Bears and Pandas swim program working with those organizations as well as the University of Alberta Swim Alumni, it is anticipated that the level of success of all swimmers in Northern Alberta will increase over time.

Humby, who joined the University of Calgary staff in 1998, attended the University of South Carolina where he graduated with a Bachelor of Business Management degree. Humby also swam for the Gamecocks as team captain for four seasons before starting his coaching career in 1981 in Thunder Bay, Ontario. He served as Head Coach for the Thunder Bay Thunderbolts for nine seasons before moving to Ottawa where he was the head age group coach of the Ottawa-Gloucester Kingfish for four seasons. In 1995 he moved to Guelph where he coached the Marlins for three years before heading west to Calgary. During his eight years with the U of C he watched his athletes dominate age group competitions across the country, winning Alberta Provincial Championships, Western Canadian Championships and Club Nationals.

Humby recently served as the Canadian Youth Junior/Tour swim team Head Coach that competed in Melbourne, Australia in January of 2006 and believes that the foundation of a swimmer’s success often lies in their technical skills and stresses the importance of the fundamentals.

His experiences in Melbourne have certainly added to his portfolio and strengthened his desire to advance to the next level of coaching. The Youth and Junior tour team was Humby’s first head coaching experience with a touring group and the veteran coach is eager for his newest endeavour.
