Event Production Crew
Tradition and success are two words that best describe University of Alberta Golden Bears and Pandas Athletics. In order for this success to be achieved, a diligent, behind the scenes, staff must ensure all events run smooth and effectively. With twenty-four teams and over five hundred student-athletes, the University of Alberta Athletics is a leader in Canadian Interuniversity Sport. We are looking for outgoing individuals to fill positions in our Hockey, Basketball and Volleyball Production Crews for all varsity home games throughout NEXT season (September - March). If you have an interest in sport and want to assist the Athletic Department in providing an atmosphere for our student athletes and spectators, we want to hear from you.
The Production Crew consists of the following positions: Switcher + Production Director / Instant Replay Operator / Music Operator / Camera Operator
Position Duration:
September 2023Â to March 2024
Compensation:
$16-20/hr + 4.0% vac. pay + 3.46% stat pay
Hours per Month:
Approx. 20-40 hours/month - Expected to work approximately 6 hours during game day
1. Switcher / Production Director
The Switcher / Production Production Director will switch between multiple cameras, virtual inputs and live virtual sets, while inserting clips, titles and motion graphics during broadcast.
Job Responsibilities
- Operate switching system on game nights
- Set-up the radio play-by-play equipment for pre-game and half-time shows to:
- Select camera shots
- Insert graphics
- Insert commercial spots
- Select highlights to replay during the game
- Co-ordinate audio feeds
- Prepare 10 to 15 minute pre-game show that includes interviews with players and coaches
- Prepare Half-time show, consisting of highlights and other Golden Bears & Pandas scores
- Archive and upload game footage
- Build graphics during the pre-production time prior to the game
- Coordinate with radio announcers to determine what story-lines will be followed
- Archive game footage and highlights onto the FTP server
- Secures equipment post-game
- Deliver high resolution highlight package on a portable digital format on game nights with a written shot sheet that clearly describes the situation, action and result for each sequence
2. Replay OperatorÂ
The Replay Operator will operate the instant replay decks and recall instant replays as directed by the Switcher /Â Production Director. Assist in the execution of the event script, as assigned, assuring all event elements and corporate sponsorship obligations are fulfilled while enhancing the overall live sporting event atmosphere.
Job Responsibilities
- Organize and maintain replay archive during event
- Create melts for play back and archiving purposes
- Assist department in maintaining high level of event production
- Assist in post game archiving and content organization
3. Audio Operator
The Audio Operator is responsible for the in-game music and all audio associated with the PA Announcer, videos, and graphics.
Job responsibilities
- Works in collaboration with the Switcher Production Director and PA Announcer
- Sets up and maintains Audio Catalogue system (In-house music)
- Prepare song lists prior to games
- Insert, edit, and organize songs
- Instrumental in creating a highly entertaining and family fun atmosphere
4. Camera OperatorÂ
The Camera Operator will be required to set up and tear down the camera equipment at each event. During the event itself, the camera operator is required to film the action to the specifics of the Show Director.Â
Job responsibilities
- Efficiently set up and take down the tripod, camera, cables, etc.Â
- Properly adjust exposure, white balance, focus, etc. of camera for optimal visual quality
- Be able to take direction from Switcher Production Director, close ups of the action, wide shots, fan shots, etc. Be ready to get the best shot.Â
- Assist department in maintaining a high level of event production
General Qualifications
- Available and committed to work Friday/Saturday nights for particular sport
- Technically savvy with ability to multi-task, cross-train and learn new skills quickly.
- Strong understanding of live sports television
- In-depth knowledge of the game of basketball and/or volleyball
- Previous experience on TriCaster, 3Play, VMIX or Sound Director system helpful
- Basic computer skills - Proficiency in Microsoft Office software and Internet Applications
- Outstanding communication and presentation skills
- Excellent relationship builder
- Must be self motivated, able to work independently, and be a part of a team
- Able to solve problems in an efficient and effective way
- Familiar with Golden Bears and Pandas Athletics teams and events
