EDMONTON - The Golden Bears football team's woes continued on Friday night, as the Saskatchewan Huskies scored an emphatic victory at Foote Field.

Offensive and special teams errors were the story of the day for the green and gold, with three turnovers as well as two blocked punts consistently putting the Huskies in scoring range early. Lucas Scheck starred defensively for the visitors, grabbing two interceptions within a span of five minutes in the opening quarter to set the tone, while Owen Mazur got his hand on both of the blocked punts.

Huskies QB Anton Amundrud threw for six touchdowns and 279 yards, with both Rhett Vavra and Keaton Belsher scoring multiple TDs. 

Seth Poelzer gained 88 yards on the ground for the Golden Bears on just 14 attempts, tallying 6.3 yards per carry. The passing game wasn't able to get off the ground consistently, however, with Christian Veilleux completing 26 of 44 passes for 229 yards. The Ottawa native did also rush for a season-high 67 yards.

The Alberta defensive unit had some strong plays in the opening quarter, with Mitchell Qually and Toby Ajayi both tallying big tackles for loss to help stall out Huskies drives. But the issue came from just how many drive opportunities Saskatchewan were able to get, with three of them starting inside the Alberta half in the first quarter alone. 

While the Golden Bears mostly held their own defensively in the first, the second quarter saw the Huskies score 31 points, the biggest highlight of which was a 53-yard bomb to Belsher from Amundrud that made it 34-0. Charlie Wiersma then got the Golden Bears on the board with a 16-yard field goal, before Vavra scored his second touchdown with just 10 seconds remaining on the clock before halftime.

The Golden Bears had their best drive of the game midway through the third quarter, going 95 yards in eight plays in an offensive set that included a 20-yard run from Veilleux and a 23-yard completion to receiver Dane Yuzdepski that helped set up a rushing score for Eli Hetlinger from just outside the end zone. Veilleux then returned to the field to run in a two-point conversion.

However, aside from a rouge on the ensuing kickoff the home side were unable to get more points on the board, and the night finished with a final score of 65-12.

Following an 0-3 start to the season, the Bears will aim to use the juice of a rivalry clash to get some positive momentum going when they head on the road to face the Calgary Dinos on Friday, September 25.
