Guezen, Moore send Pandas past Carabins in national quarter-final

Top-seeded Pandas advance to play host TWU Spartans in Semifinal on Saturday

LANGLEY, BC – Led by Abby Guezen and Allie Moore, the Alberta Pandas punched their ticket to the U SPORTS Semifinal with a 3-1 win over the Montreal Carabins, Friday night at the Langley Events Centre.

Guezen, the 2026 U SPORTS Player of the Year, led the Pandas with a match-high 18 kills, while Moore was extremely efficient on attack, scoring 10 kills on just 16 attempts. Fifth-year setter Justine Kolody added 37 assists and four digs for Alberta.

Alberta will now advance to take on the host Trinity Western Spartans in the national semifinal on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. MT, in a rematch of last weekend's Canada West Final. The win is a mark of revenge for the Pandas, who lost to Montreal in the 2025 U SPORTS Semifinal.

Sephora Menye obele led the Carabins with 14 kills, as Montreal will move to the consolation side of the championship, and play UBC tomorrow afternoon.

After a tight start to the opening set, a 10-4 Alberta run pushed them ahead 15-9 as they took control of the first. The Pandas were incredibly efficient on attack, scoring 11 kills on just 19 attempts, adding three aces to go along with their .421 attack percentage.

Moore was a perfect 5/5 on her attempts in the first set, with the fourth-year middle also scoring two of the Pandas aces. Guezen also added three kills in the first.

Montreal came out firing in the second, scoring a pair of kills to take an early 5-1 lead. The Pandas were plagued by mistakes as the second set carried on, committing seven service errors and six attack errors. Despite the miscues, the Pandas were able to claw back, tying the set at 20-20 and 23-23. However back-to-back kills from Milica Djordjevic and Eva Genier gave the set to Montreal, 25-23.

Much better passing and offence from the Pandas in the third let them restore a one-set lead thanks to a 25-19 win. After a back-and-forth start, the Pandas stormed ahead 15-10, a lead they would not relinquish. The Pandas scored 16 kills in the third on 39 attempts, led by six from Guezen and three each from Laila Johnston and Ronnie Dickson.

The momentum carried over into the fourth, as the Pandas raced ahead 7-2, forcing a Carabins timeout. It didn't slow Alberta down, as four more quick points gave the top seed an 11-2 lead. In complete control, the Pandas cruised to a 25-12 fourth set win, taking the match 3-1.
