EDMONTON, AB – One dynasty was cemented, while another one fell as the 2026 Canada West Wrestling banners were awarded on Saturday inside the Main Gymnasium on University of Alberta campus.
The Calgary Dino women earned a third-straight conference title and pushed their record total to 14 Canada West banners thanks to a dominant performance in Edmonton. On the men's side, the Saskatchewan Huskies won their sixth Canada West title, and first since 2020. The Huskies win also ended the host Golden Bears run atop the podium, as the Alberta men had won the previous four and seven of the last eight CW banners entering 2025/26.
The host Alberta Pandas finished just seven points behind the Dinos in second, followed by the Huskies and Lethbridge Pronghorns. The Dino men finished second overall on the men's side, followed closely by the Golden Bears in third.
Powering the Dinos was fifth-year Science student Maya Johnston, who was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Year on the women's side after winning the women's 53kg weight class. Johnston defeated Alberta Panda
Julia Daus 10-0, before earning a decisive 10-2 win over Huskie Sierra Mullin.
Johnston was one of six Dinos to earn a gold medal on Saturday, as she was joined by Gabriela Cross (56kg), Elizabeth Latulippe (59kg), Annika Fines (62kg), Mackenzie Cayer (65kg), and Angelina Ellis-Toddington (68kg). The host Alberta Pandas were led by gold medallists
Aaliyah Hartfelder (72kg),
Brydon Switzer (76kg), and
Victoria Stefanov (50kg), the latter of which was named the CW Rookie of the Year. Myah Phillips (83kg) was the lone Huskie to place atop the podium on the women's side.
Saskatchewan finished with five gold medalists on the men's side, as Donovan Neudorf (65kg), Nathan Kowal (68kg), Takis Sembaleras (72kg), (76kg), Matthew Yong (100kg) and Yuel Kebrom (61kg), with Kebrom taking home conference rookie of the year honours.
The injury ravaged Golden Bears had four first-place finishes, but were hurt in the standings with a depleted roster. Outstanding Wrestler of the Year
Thomas Rousseau (90kg) was one of the four Bears to earn gold, along with
Ben Reid (57kg),
Aidan Stevenson (82kg), and
Bjorn Nelson (125kg).
Mark Schwichtenberg (76kg) earned Calgary's lone gold medal on the men's side, but seven silver medals pushed them above Alberta for second in the standings.
Next on the wrestling calendar is the 2026 U SPORTS Championship, February 27th and 28th in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
