EDMONTON – Zach Zahara made 25 saves for the shutout as the Mount Royal Cougars beat the University of Alberta Golden Bears 2-0 on Saturday night to complete a weekend sweep.

The game was scoreless through the first period before Justin Lies broke through on the power play 23 seconds into the second, with Ty Gibson and Ruslan Jamaldinov picking up the assists. Alberta pushed for the equalizer and out-shot the Cougars 19-16 over the final two periods, but Zahara turned aside everything the Golden Bears threw at him.

Alberta pulled goaltender Ethan Lawczynski in the final minute for an extra attacker, and Connor Bouchard sealed the win with an empty-net goal at 19:12 of the third, assisted by Dax Williams. Lawczynski finished with 23 saves on 24 shots faced.

Both teams finished with 25 shots on the night.

The loss drops the Golden Bears to 2-4-0 on the season, while Mount Royal improves to 5-1-0. The Golden Bears will next face the Calgary Dinos in a home-and-home series, hosting the Dinos on Saturday night at Silent Ice Center.
