EDMONTON – Caelum Dick scored the first goal of his Golden Bears career at 2:16 of overtime to give the University of Alberta a 2-1 win over the MacEwan Griffins on Saturday at Silent Ice Center, completing a season-opening weekend sweep.
It was the Golden Bears home opener and their first regular-season game at their temporary home in 2026/27 new rink. Dick finished off passes from Gleb Tkach and Junshi Hideshima for the winner. The Golden Bears are 2-0 to start the season, while MacEwan falls to 0-4.
MacEwan's Garrett Thom opened the scoring at 7:32 of the second period, and the Griffins held that lead into the third. Dwayne Jean Jr., a former Griffin who also scored Friday night in Alberta's 3-1 win, tied it on the power play at 1:45 of the third with assists from Rhett Melnyk and Adam Lang. Alberta outshot MacEwan 13-6 in the period but needed the extra frame to get the go-ahead goal.
Goaltender Beckett Langkow made 23 saves on 24 shots for the win, while MacEwan's Zac Onyskiw stopped 26 of 28. Alberta went 1-for-2 on the power play, and both teams were whistled for just two minor penalties.
The Golden Bears will host the Manitoba Bisons next weekend.
