EDMONTON – Abbey Bourdeaud'hui scored twice and goaltender Grace Glover stopped 27 shots as the University of Alberta Pandas opened their season with a 3-1 win over the MacEwan Griffins in their home opener on Friday at Silent Ice Center.

Cassia Severin gave Alberta the lead late in the first period, scoring the first goal of her career at 16:02 off a Hailey Carothers assist. MacEwan's Sawyer Mackay tied it early in the second, but Bourdeaud'hui restored the lead with a power-play goal at 11:43, her first of the season, with Daniella Martorana and Holly Magnus picking up the assists. Glover then made sure it stayed that way. She turned aside 11 shots in the third period as MacEwan pushed for an equalizer, and Bourdeaud'hui sealed it with a short-handed empty-net goal at 19:43.

MacEwan out-shot Alberta 28-22, but the Pandas killed off all six MacEwan power plays and went 1-for-3 on the powerplay.

The win moves Alberta to 1-0 on the season.

The Pandas will travel to face the MacEwan Griffins on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 5 p.m. The game can be seen live on Canada West TV powered by BioSteel.
