EDMONTON – Caden Ruby scored in added time to rescue a 2-2 draw for the University of Alberta Golden Bears against the MacEwan Griffins on Saturday at Foote Field, capping a comeback in wintry conditions after the Bears had two second-half goals disallowed.
With temperatures at -4 C, sleet and snow falling and 40 km/h winds, Alberta dominated play but found itself trailing at the break. Alberta finished with a 22-3 advantage in shots and a 10-2 edge on target, but MacEwan goalkeeper David Sithole made eight saves to keep the Griffins in it. The draw leaves Alberta at 4-4-3 on the season, while MacEwan sits at 0-9-2.
Justin George opened the scoring in the seventh minute with the first goal of his career, finishing off a Patrick Kondraciuk assist. MacEwan's Felix Guite answered with two goals in under three minutes, in the 35th and 38th minutes, to send the Griffins into halftime with a 2-1 lead.
Alberta poured on the pressure in the second half, outshooting MacEwan 15-1 over the final 45 minutes, and appeared to level it twice, only to have both goals called back. The Golden Bears finally broke through at the death, when Ruby converted a Giorgio Artunduaga assist at the 90-minute mark for his third goal of the season.
The two teams will meet again Sunday, Oct. 18, at noon, with Alberta traveling to MacEwan. The game can be seen live on Canada West TV powered by BioSteel.
