Dylan Martens combine for 25 kills, as the U SPORTS #7 ranked Golden Bears sweep the TRU WolfPack.
The Bears finished Saturday's match with 48 kills on an impressive .354 attack %, adding seven aces and seven blocks.Â
The pair of wins sees the Bears improve to 11-5 this season, as they maintain their hold on the fifth seed, and sit just one game back of Manitoba for fourth.Â
At the net,
Trent Cherewaty delivered a strong all-around showing with seven kills, two aces, and eight total blocks (one solo, seven assists), while
Matt Shand chipped in nine kills, two aces, and seven digs. Setter
Luke Weddell orchestrated the offence with 36 assists, guiding Alberta to a .354 team hitting percentage after a slow start.
For Thompson Rivers, Rylan Ibbetson led the WolfPack with seven kills, while Daniel Hitchens added seven kills on efficient swings. Setter Walker Sodaro posted 27 assists, but TRU was held to .236 hitting overall.
Set One
The WolfPack set the early tone, capitalizing on Alberta errors and extended rallies. Ibbetson and Parker Bailey found success from the pins, while TRU held Alberta to .100 hitting in the opener. Despite late kills from Martens and Sargent, Thompson Rivers closed the set with a 4-1 run to take a 1-0 lead.
Set Two
Alberta responded decisively in the second set. Martens and Sargent combined for six kills, while Cherewaty controlled the middle with quick finishes and timely blocks. A service run from
Owen Harris, which included an ace at mid-set, helped Alberta open separation as the Golden Bears hit .310 to even the match.
Set Three
The third set featured the most sustained pressure from Alberta. Shand delivered multiple momentum swings from the end line, and Weddell spread the offence to all three front-row options. Cherewaty and
Kai Boettcher teamed up on key blocks late, allowing Alberta to close the set despite TRU hitting .450 in its strongest offensive frame of the match.
Set Four
Alberta closed with its cleanest volleyball of the afternoon, hitting .524 while limiting the WolfPack to .261. Sargent scored twice in transition to stretch the lead early, and Martens added a sharp cross-court kill at 18–15 to halt a brief TRU push. Cherewaty sealed the match with a block assist, capping a composed finish.
