Game Recap: Pandas Hockey |

Pandas fall in shootout, split series with Huskies

Huskies erase two-goal deficit, win 3-2 in shootout

EDMONTON - The Pandas are unable to hold onto a two-goal lead, allowing two third-period goals in a 3-2 shootout loss to Saskatchewan.

Both contests this weekend went to a shootout in what will very likely be a quarter-final matchup between the Pandas and Huskies. With six games remaining, the Pandas own a 9-6-7 record.

Holly Magnus opened the scoring for Alberta with a late first-period goal and finished with a team-high two shots on net. Sara Kazeil added a power-play marker in the second period, converting one of Alberta's four opportunities with the player advantage. Natalie Kieser and Riley Smith each recorded assists, while Mackenzie Dojahn turned aside 22 shots in a complete-game effort between the pipes.

For Saskatchewan, Jayde Cadieux played a pivotal role, scoring a short-handed goal early in the third to spark the comeback. Peppi Virtanen added the tying goal on the power play, and the Huskies were credited with the overtime winner on a net-front scramble. Goaltender Colby Wilson was steady, stopping 21 of 23 shots to earn the win.

First Period

Alberta carried the play through much of the opening frame, generating sustained offensive-zone time. After killing off an early power play, the Pandas broke through late. At 18:12, Holly Magnus snapped home an even-strength goal, finishing a setup from Natalie Kieser and Riley Smith to give Alberta a 1-0 lead heading into intermission.

Second Period

The Pandas extended their advantage early in the middle frame. Following a hooking penalty to Makenna Stevens, Alberta capitalized on the power play at 8:24. Sara Kazeil buried the chance, converting a feed from Hailey Carothers and Hayleigh Craig to make it 2-0. Saskatchewan pressed later in the period, earning a power play after a slashing call to Leighanna Rizarri, but Alberta's penalty kill held firm, preserving the two-goal cushion after forty minutes.

Third Period

Momentum shifted quickly in the final frame. While short-handed, Saskatchewan cut the deficit at 3:26, when Jayde Cadieux finished a counterattack set up by Shelby Williamson, pulling the Huskies within one. Alberta continued to push, but a costly sequence of penalties opened the door for the visitors.

At 12:55, Saskatchewan drew a lengthy two-player advantage, and Peppi Virtanen converted on the power play, finishing a feed from Kendra Zuchotzki and Bronwyn Boucher to tie the game 2-2.

Shootout

Cadieux and Sara Kendall scored on both Huskies shootout attempts, with Wilson stopping two of three Pandas shots to earn the win.
