REGINA, SK - Leading by as many as nine in the fourth quarter, the Golden Bears mustered just eight points in the final frame, falling 68-64 to Regina. Alberta also led 64-61 with 98 seconds remaining, allowing a 7-0 Cougars run to end the game.Â
The loss drops the Bears to 10-5, who still maintain their hold on the second seed in the Prairie Division.Â
Isaac Simon led Alberta with 15 points, adding four assists and a steal while shouldering heavy minutes throughout the contest. Matthew Osunde delivered a strong two-way performance with 13 points, five rebounds, and two assists. Kyle Varner posted a near double-double with 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds, while Nate Waldron provided valuable interior work off the bench with seven points and eight rebounds.
For Regina, Ben Kamba paced all scorers with 17 points, while Lodie Kenyi added 16 points, including four three-pointers. Kaz Dornstrauder contributed nine points and key late free throws that sealed the outcome.
First Quarter
Alberta set the tone early, opening on an 8-0 run highlighted by three-pointers from Matthew Osunde Isaac Simon, both assisted during crisp ball movement. Simon added a transition layup at 8:09, and Logan Powell knocked down a three at 6:24 to stretch the lead. The Bears forced early turnovers and converted at the line, carrying a 25-18 advantage after one.
Second Quarter
The Golden Bears maintained control through the second, though Regina began to settle offensively. Caiden Kushnir finished inside at 9:09, and Osunde followed with a jumper at 8:47 to keep Alberta ahead. Regina answered with perimeter shooting from Kenyi and Dornstrauder, trimming the gap. A late three from Carson Fisher at 2:43, set up by Varner, helped Alberta regain momentum, and the Bears went into halftime leading 39-34.
Third Quarter
Both teams traded baskets in a tightly contested third. Simon opened the half with a three at 9:12, assisted by Powell, before Regina responded with consecutive scores from Kenyi and Cade Mather to pull within one. Alberta leaned on Waldron and Varner to steady the game, with Varner drilling a three at 5:01 and Waldron converting inside at 4:27. The Bears entered the fourth up 56-51.
Fourth Quarter
Regina flipped the script in the final frame. After Alberta briefly extended the lead to nine on a Powell layup at 8:23, the Cougars closed on a 17-8 run. Kamba hit a critical three at 4:05, and Sufyan Elknnan tied the game at 1:38 with a triple. Regina took the lead at the line as Dornstrauder and Kenyi combined for four free throws in the final minute, closing out a 68–64 comeback victory.
