Game Recap: Golden Bears Hockey |

Cougars stun Golden Bears with OT win

Regina earns third road win over Alberta in last five years

EDMONTON - Golden Bears Hockey opens their second half with a 4-3 home overtime loss to Regina, falling to 8-7-4 in conference play. The loss snaps a seven-game win streak for Alberta over Regina, who improves to 3-16-0 with the win.

Despite not having beat the Bears at home since 2009, Regina has now earned three road wins over Alberta in the last five years.

Paycen Bjorklund led Regina with a goal and an assist, playing a central role in the Cougars' second-period surge. Logan Barlage added a goal at even strength, while Carson Whyte scored Regina's third goal to swing momentum back in the visitors' favour. Jackson Doucet delivered the decisive moment, scoring the short-handed overtime winner.

For Alberta, Justin Hall recorded a goal and an assist, Adam Hall finished with a goal and an assist, and Tyson Laventure opened the scoring while also setting up the third-period equalizer. Goaltender Ethan Kruger made 28 saves in the loss, while Regina netminder Damon Cunningham stopped 34 shots to earn the win.

First Period

Alberta struck first at 4:40, when Tyson Laventure finished a pass from Justin Hall with Bruce MacGregor also earning an assist. The Golden Bears controlled much of the period territorially, limiting Regina to few clean looks. Alberta earned a power play at 15:19 after Ayden Third was called for hooking, but Cunningham and the Cougars' penalty kill held firm, sending the Bears into intermission with a 1-0 lead.

Second Period

Regina flipped the game midway through the frame. At 15:10, Logan Barlage tied the contest, converting a feed from Bjorklund and Rylan Silzer. Less than two minutes later, Bjorklund gave Regina the lead at 16:54, taking a pass from Cole Wirun and snapping it past Kruger to make it 2-1.

The period ended with tempers flaring, as coincidental roughing minors and a 10-minute misconduct to Laventure set the tone for a tense third.

Third Period

Alberta responded early in the final frame. At 3:51, Justin Hall tied the game, finishing a setup from Alex Thacker and Adam Hall. Regina answered again at 9:36, as Carson Whyte restored the Cougars' lead with an unassisted goal off a broken play.

The Golden Bears pushed back once more at 12:30, when Adam Hall converted a feed from Laventure and Dawson Davidson, knotting the game 3-3 and forcing overtime.

Overtime

Alberta earned a power play early in the extra frame, but the advantage proved costly. At 4:14, Jackson Doucet jumped on a loose puck and scored short-handed, sealing a 4-3 Regina win.
