Edmonton, AB – Five teams remain unbeaten after a dramatic opening day of the 2026 Canada West Curling Championships at Saville Community Sports Centre.

Three women's teams and two men's teams will head into Friday's draws with no losses, with the first day of the largest CW Championship on record featuring thrilling comebacks and stellar shot-making.

On the women's side, three squads remain unbeaten, as Alberta, Regina, and UBC Okanagan head into Friday's draws unblemished. The Pandas are the only team on the women's side with a 3-0 record, followed by Regina at 2-0, and the Heat (1-0) besting Brandon in their only game on Thursday.

After dominant wins in the first two draws, the host Pandas needed to stage a dramatic comeback in the evening draw, squeaking out a 6-5 win over Victoria after trailing 4-1 through five ends. The Pandas scored three in the sixth, held the Vikes to one in the seventh, before skip Gracelyn Richards drew the pin in eight to score two in what was arguably the shot of the day.

Regina kicked off their CW title defence with narrow wins over Brandon and Calgary, and will take on the Pandas at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow in a clash of championship favourites.

The Alberta Golden Bears and Calgary Dinos sit atop the men's standings sporting matching 3-0 records. The host Bears were utterly dominant on Thursday, earning decisive wins over UBC, Lethbridge, and Victoria, outscoring their opponents 32-10. The Dinos, who are the defending silver medallists at this event, began the 2026 Championship with wins over Lethbridge (11-2), Victoria (11-2), and Regina (7-1). Calgary's win over Victoria opened with a score of seven in the first end for the Dinos, who are looking for their first conference curling title in program history.

Friday will see three draws at Saville Centre, scheduled for 9:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m., and 7:00 p.m. All games are streamed on the CurlingZone YouTube page.
