EDMONTON - The Alberta Golden Bears used a 30-point second quarter to pull away from the Saskatchewan Huskies in what was a dominant 89-60 victory Friday night at the Saville Centre.
It was largely a depth effort for the 9-2 Bears, who featured five players who scored double-digits in a cumulative 47.5% effort from the field. Matthew Osunde tied a season-high with 19 points to lead Alberta, while Caiden Kushnir had 16 points to go with nine rebounds to help the fourth-ranked offence in the conference in the win.
The CW-leading rebounder Easton Thimm had a fantastic game for the Huskies, scoring a game-high 21 points and collected 12 boards for his sixth double-double of the season. The Huskies did a great job of not turning the ball over, but were unable to shoot the rock effectively, finishing with a 37.9% mark from the field, and were only three-for-18 from beyond the arc. They drop to 2-9 on the season, and sit tied for last in the Prairie Division.
Following a thrilling game from the women's teams, the two sides seemed to pick up on the intensity, with a basket incredibly hard to come by in the first quarter. Both teams shot around 37% in the quarter, and turned the ball over five times, as they struggled to get any sustained runs going. The frame finished up at 16-14 favouring the Bears, as Emmanuel Bonsu led all scorers with six points for the visitors.
The second quarter was an entirely different story though, as the Bears rode a loud crowd to a staggering 30-12 quarter win, highlighted by nine in the frame from Isaac Simon. Alberta shot an incendiary 78% from the field, and held the Huskies to a 20% mark of their own, as they took a 46-26 lead into the half.
The Huskies showed a much better effort in the second half, but the disastrous second quarter was enough to put them away 89-60. The teams return to do battle tomorrow night at the Saville Centre.
