Gerry Inglis

Sports Wall of Fame

Remembering Gerry Inglis

One of the most decorated offensive lineman in Golden Bears Football history, 2014 Sports Wall of Fame inductee Gerry Inglis passed away earlier this week.

His passing was fast, sudden, and he was doing exactly what he loved — having a wonderful day, full of joy and laughter, surrounded by friends and by his side.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 9th at 1:00 p.m. at St. Thomas Moore Church in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Gerry's celebration of life will follow at the Evario Event Centre in SouthWest Edmonton, 3 PM. All are welcome.

Born in Swift Current, Gerry was a multi-sport athlete in high school, Gerry competed in football, baseball, hockey and track and field. At the University of Alberta Gerry played Golden Bears football from 1973-1976 under head coach Jim Donlevy. Anchoring the offensive line at the centre position, Gerry was selected a Canada West all-star in 1975 and 1976 and an all-Canadian in 1976. He capped off his university football career in 1976 by receiving the Frank Morris award as the Golden Bear's most valuable lineman and the J.P. Metras trophy as the top lineman in Canadian university football. Gerry was a terrific blocker, special team downfield tackler and made the long snap with laser-like precision. Always a team leader, Gerry served several years as a Golden Bear team captain. In 1978 Gerry received his Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Alberta.

Drafted in 1976 by the British Columbia Lions, Gerry played two seasons (1977 and 1978) with the Lions before being traded in 1978 to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He finished his Canadian Football League career with the Toronto Argonauts in 1980.

After retiring from football, Gerry went on to a highly successful business career in the hospitality business.

Gerry served two stints as offensive line coach with the Golden Bear football program, in 1981-1983 and again from 2001-2006. A strong testament to Gerry's coaching skills was the Golden Bear's dominant ground attack, which produced league leading rushing totals. Gerry has a strong background in community involvement having coached a variety of community based boys and girls sports teams including Little League baseball, basketball, softball, and hockey. Supporting the community, either as a coach or manning the barbecue was always a top priority for Gerry. Gerry has also been a long time member of the Board of Regents for Athol Murray College in Wilcox Saskatchewan (2004-to present).

Gerry demonstrated a passion for excellence, a tireless work ethic, and impressive leadership qualities when playing for the Golden Bears, characteristics that have carried over to his business career.
