Victoria, B.C. – The University of Victoria women's rugby team came away with an 82-19 win over the University of Alberta, Sept. 21 at Victoria's Wallace Field.
The Vikes (4-0) were led by a second-half try hat trick from Eden Kilgour, while Alberta (1-2-1) saw three different try-scorers in Stella Henry, Anela Hebert, and
Mikayla Gibbon.
The Pandas were the first to get on the board, with Stella Henry diving over the line in the second minute for the score. Adding a convert from
Keira Skrenek, Alberta went ahead, 7-0.
In turn, the Vikes responded with four tries of their own, scoring in the eighth, 11th, 15th, and 19th minutes to take the lead, 24-7.
Alberta stopped the Vikes' scoring run in the 22nd minute, with Anela Hebert peeling away from the maul and breaking away to the end zone to put points on the board for the Pandas, 24-12. However, the Vikes managed to put four more tries on the board before the end of the first half, taking a 46-12 lead into the break.
Out of halftime, it was once again the Pandas that struck first. Up against a wall of Vikes defenders near the goal line,
Mikayla Gibbon found space and dove through anyone in her way to get the ball down for the Alberta try. Skrenek was successful on the convert to bring the score to 46-19 in favour of the Vikes in the 51st minute.
Victoria put the final points of the game on the board, scoring six tries and three converts over the next 30 minutes, bringing the final score to 82-19 for Victoria.
Next up, the Vikes host the University of British Columbia while the Pandas host the Calgary Dinos on Saturday.
