Assem, Ruby score in 2-2 Bears tie with MacEwan

Bears outshot MacEwan 17-8 in Saturday's draw

EDMONTON — The Alberta Golden Bears and MacEwan Griffins played to a 2-2 draw Saturday at Clarke Stadium.

With the draw, Alberta moved to 1-1-1 on the season, while MacEwan sits at 0-2-1. Alberta held a 17-8 shot advantage and generated 10 corner kicks, but were unable to put away MacEwan in the second half. Leading 2-1, an 82nd minute MacEwan tally leveled the match.

After a scoreless first half, the match opened up quickly. Alberta struck first in the 46th minute when Habib Assem buried a feed from Caden Ruby.

MacEwan answered in the 55th minute. Ali Yildiz converted from the penalty spot to even the score at 1-1.

Just three minutes later, Alberta regained the lead. Ruby finished a chance in the 58th minute, set up by Harkirat Malhi.

The Griffins pulled level again in the 82nd minute when Jakob Sievert found space and scored unassisted, sealing the 2-2 result.

Alberta finished with a 17-8 edge in shots, including seven on target. Ruby and Assem led the attack with a combined seven attempts, while Rodane Cato added five.

MacEwan relied on efficiency, recording four shots on goal and capitalizing twice. Yildiz and Sievert supplied the goals, while goalkeeper Kaleb Lutz kept his side in it with five saves.

Alberta keeper Trystan Read made two stops.

The Bears earned 10 corner kicks to MacEwan's two but couldn't convert late pressure into a winner. Alberta had seven fouls and two yellow cards, while MacEwan collected nine fouls and four cautions.

Alberta will host Lethbridge and Saskatchewan next weekend in their first matches at Foote Field this season.
