CALGARY – An offensive surge led Mount Royal to a 3–1 victory over the Alberta Golden Bears on Saturday afternoon at Cougar Field.
Alberta struck first in the 14th minute when defender
Thomas Hope opened the scoring with his first of the season, heading in a corner-kick from
Frankroy Cain.
Despite the early deficit, the Cougars responded swiftly. Nicholas Oteng equalized in the 36th minute off a well-placed pass from Joshua Flaksman, then struck again just three minutes later, this time assisted by Finn Marshall, giving Mount Royal a 2–1 lead heading into halftime.
Alberta pushed for an equalizer in the second half but were denied by MRU goalkeeper Sjard Strauss, who finished with three saves. The Cougars extended their lead in the 51st minute when Flaksman found the back of the net off a setup from Chanan Chanda, sealing the 3–1 result.
The Bears recorded 11 shots (4 on target) and earned nine corner kicks but couldn't break through after the opening goal. Rookie Bears keeper
Trystan Read matched Strauss with three saves on the day in his first career start. Discipline was a factor, with a combined nine yellow cards issued in the physical matchup.
The Golden Bears will stay in Calgary tomorrow, as they look for a rebound victory in a matchup against the Calgary Dinos.
