Semeniuk scores 23 as Bears win third straight

Efficient night from Bears freshman leads to 75-61 win

EDMONTON – Rookie Bear Nash Semeniuk continued his stellar second half, scoring a game-high 23 points in a 75-61 Alberta win over Regina on Saturday night.

Semeniuk needed only 13 shots to score his 23, making nine shots from the field, and five from beyond the arc for Alberta. The win is the third-straight for the suddenly hot Bears, who now own a 7-9 record with four games remaining in the regular season.

Fellow rookie Kyle Varner added 17 points and five rebounds, to go along with 16 from Isaac Simon. Ethan Egert added a double-double, pulling in 12 rebounds and scoring 10.

Christian Tabiri led Regina with 19, as the loss was the fifth-straight for the Cougars, who have fallen down the conference standings, now owning a 6-10 record. They do still hold onto the seventh and final playoff spot in the Prairie Division.

Ben Kamba led Regina in the opening quarter, who finished the first 10 minutes with a 21-17 lead. Kamba scored six of his 12 in the game in the first, making all three of his shots. Semeniuk led the Bears with seven.

Friday night's Alberta win saw Alberta take over the game in the third quarter. Saturday it was the second quarter, with a pair of runs giving Alberta an 11-point lead at the break. Semeniuk scored 10 in the second, coupled with a red-hot Simon in the quarter, who had 13. Semeniuk was 7/8 in the first half.

As was the story the night before, the Cougars lost the long range battle. Alberta made eight 3's in the first half, and 13 over four quarters. Regina, by comparison, went 4/18 from beyond the arc.

The Bears clamped down their defence in the second half, allowing just 24 Regina points, with only nine coming in the fourth.
