EDMONTON - The Alberta Golden Bears got everything they wanted and more on the attacking side of the ball as they cruised to a 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-16) victory over the UFV Cascades Saturday evening at the Saville Centre.
Jacob Sargent and Matt Shand led the Bears offensively, getting 11 and eight kills, while Jarvis Page was the orchestrator all night, finishing with 33 assists. The win puts the Bears, the number three team in the nation, at a comfortable 5-1, their only loss coming last weekend to UBCO.
Roan McCarthy once again led the Cascades in kills with nine, but it was a relatively bleak day for the young UFV offence, who finished hitting just .162 on the day. They are still winless at 0-6, and will look to get back on track next weekend hosting the UBCO Heat.
The first set saw a spirited effort from both sides as the teams inched forward to 14-14, with Martens leading the way for the Bears and McCarthy pacing the Cascades. It would get as close as 20-19 for UFV, but Martens would have two huge kills, part of his set-high five, down the stretch as the Bears squeaked out a tight 25-22 victory.
Alberta used the momentum from a tight first set to dominate the Cascades in the second. They hit a blistering .579%, held the visitors to a .125% mark, and won the set by a cavernous 25-14 score. Matt Shand and Jacob Sargent led the way for the Bears with five and four kills, respectively, in the set.
It was more of the same in a Bears-led third set, as the home side amazingly only made one attacking error in the frame en route to a 25-16 set and match victory. The Bears have a bye week next weekend before hosting the MRU Cougars later this month.
