EDMONTON - Abby Guezen and Laila Johnston had a game-high 13 kills, and Mackenzie Pool added five service aces as the Alberta Pandas swept the MRU Cougars 3-0 (25-20, 25-10, 25-15) Friday night at the Saville Centre.
It was quite the offensive output for the conference's most efficient team in the Pandas, as they hit .391 on the day and added a staggering 14 service aces to cruise to the sweep win. Guezen, Johnston, Pool, and Allie Moore led the way for Alberta in one of the most complete wins to date for Alberta. With the victory, Alberta moves to 7-1 and sit third in the conference just behind Saskatchewan and Thompson Rivers.
The Cougars played well in the first set, but were unable to build on some positive momentum en route to the straight-set loss. Mya Morgan impressed with a team-high six kills to go with two total blocks, but MRU ultimately drops to 2-5 on the year.
The first set was a tight affair, with the largest lead on both sides was just two points as the squads struggled to get any run going through a 15-15 game midway through the frame. The Pandas would ignite from there behind a raucous Saville faithful, as they would go on consecutive 5-1, and 5-2 runs to take the opener 25-20. They hit an impressive .303 in the set, and saw Abby Guezen and Laila Johnston record set-high six and five kills, respectively. The Cougars were far from bereft in good performances, with Mya Morgan having arguably the best set of both sides going a perfect four-for-four attacking, and added an ace and a block.
Riding the set win, the Pandas jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the second, led by three kills from Allie Moore, to force an early Cougars timeout. They would not stop there, buoyed by some stellar serving in which they recorded six aces from four different sources, as they would take the second in a dominant 25-10 fashion.Â
The third set saw the Cougars with a more measured approach, and they succeeded early on, holding an 8-7 lead. However, the Alberta onslaught was too much to bear, and they would only score seven points the rest of the way as the Pandas took this set 25-15.
The teams return to action tomorrow for their last regular season matchup.
