EDMONTON — A second-half goal from T-boy Fayia lifted the MacEwan Griffins to a 1–0 win over the Alberta Golden Bears on Saturday afternoon at Foote Field.
MacEwan was gifted the scoring chance after
Tyson Blight misplayed a ball back to Bears keeper
Trystan Read, as Fayia took advantage and potted the ball into the open Alberta net. The 1-0 win is MacEwan's first ever over Alberta, snapping a 21-game winless streak.Â
After a cagey opening 45 minutes that saw both teams trade chances, neither side managed to break through before halftime. Alberta generated the better looks early, earning a pair of corner kicks from
Jackson Belbin inside the opening 10 minutes, while
Habib Assem sent a penalty kick wide in the 22nd minute that could have given the Bears an early advantage.
The Griffins gained control after the restart, pressing forward as Alberta struggled to convert possession into quality chances.Â
Alberta pushed for an equalizer late, with
Prince Amanda sending a shot wide in stoppage time after a final corner from Belbin, but the Bears couldn't find the net.
Popravka finished with two saves to record the clean sheet for MacEwan (2–7–3), while Read stopped two of three shots faced for Alberta (5–5–2). The Bears held a 10–6 edge in total shots and 9–3 advantage in corners but were undone by missed opportunities, including the first-half penalty.
The win snapped MacEwan's three-match winless streak and marked their first road victory of the season, while Alberta fell back to the .500 mark (5-5-2) with two conference games remaining.Â
