LANGLEY, B.C. — The University of Alberta Golden Bears powered past the Trinity Western Spartans 4–2 on Friday night at the Langley Events Centre, using a dominant special teams effort to secure the win.
Tied 2-2 late in the third, the Golden Bears scored twice in the final three minutes to steal a 4-2 road win over the TWU Spartans. Dawson Davison added two assists in the win, extending his U SPORTS lead to 13 helpers in nine conference games.
Goaltender Ethan Kruger earned the win for Alberta, stopping 23 shots. Trinity Western's Raphael Audet faced heavy pressure, turning aside 42 of 45 shots. The Bears finished 3/6 on the power play, while the Spartans went 1-for-2.
First Period
The Golden Bears opened the scoring late in the first after Trinity Western's Adam Leitch was sent off for delay of game. On the ensuing power play,
Adam Hall converted at 16:23, finishing a setup from
Sam Popowich and Dawson Davidson to make it 1–0 Alberta.
Second Period
The Spartans tied the game early in the second. At 5:51, Mikhailo Simchuk scored his fifth of the season, drawing Alberta even. The forward's effort came at even strength with Eduard Wruck, Samuel May, and Jonathan Krahn on the ice.
Alberta regained the lead in the final second of the frame. With Tristan Serrao assessed double minors for roughing and head-butting, the Bears went to work on an extended power play.
Mason Ward capitalized at 19:59, burying a one-timer off a pass from Davidson to give Alberta a 2–1 edge heading into the third.
Third Period
Trinity Western tied things once again midway through the period. On a man advantage after
Adam Hall was called for high-sticking, Artem Hrabovetskyi converted at 12:46, with helpers from Connor Farren and Wruck, knotting the score at 2–2.
The Golden Bears' power play struck for a fourth time minutes later.
Alex Thacker fired home the go-ahead goal at 17:05, assisted by
Justin Hall, putting Alberta back in front for good. With less than 30 seconds remaining,
Owen Pederson sealed the victory with an empty-netter at 19:44, assisted by
Mason Ward and
Blake Gustafson.
