UBC sweeps Golden Bears with 5-2 win

EDMONTON - The University of British Columbia Thunderbirds used a dominant second period to power past the Alberta Golden Bears 5–2 on Saturday night at Clare Drake Arena, earning the weekend sweep over Alberta.

UBC outscored Alberta 10-3 in two victories, including a combined 7-0 mark in the second period. The Thunderbirds outshot the Bears 34–22 overall. Alberta goaltenders Drew Sim and Ethan Barwick combined for 29 saves, while Cole Schwebius turned aside 20 for UBC. 12 different Thunderbirds found the scoresheet with at least one point. The win sees UBC improve to 5-1-0, while Alberta falls to 4-2-0.

The Bears opened the scoring early on the power play when Justin Hall netted his third of the season at 7:45 of the first period, finishing off a setup from Tyson Laventure and Mason Ward. Alberta's early momentum was short-lived. Just over three minutes later, Reilley Kotai responded for UBC, tying the game at 1–1 off assists from Ben Kotylak and James Form. Only 16 seconds later, the Thunderbirds struck again, as Jake Lee converted a feed from Sasha Mutala and Scott Atkinson to give UBC a 2–1 lead heading into the intermission.

The second period proved decisive. Just over a minute in, Jake Wright extended the lead, finishing a pass from Ty Thorpe and Nathan Sullivan to make it 3–1. Less than two minutes later, with Alberta down a man after a tripping call, Weir capitalized on the power play, assisted by Thorpe and Wright. The onslaught continued minutes later, when Cyle McNabb added his first of the season, stretching UBC's advantage to 5–1.

Alberta struggled to generate sustained pressure through the middle frame, managing just six shots while taking several costly penalties, including a too-many-men infraction late in the period.

The Bears found some life in the third, as Mason Ward scored his second of the season in the final five minutes, with Owen Pederson drawing the lone assist. Despite outshooting UBC 11–7 in the final frame, Alberta couldn't close the gap, with Schwebius standing tall to secure the win for the Thunderbirds.

The Golden Bears will now set their sights on the East Division-leading Calgary Dinos (5-1-0), who they will host next Friday night at Clare Drake Arena.
