Golden Bears edge Griffins in overtime thriller

Laventure pots OT winner in 2-1 Bears win over Griffins

EDMONTON - The Alberta Golden Bears clawed back from an early deficit to earn a 2–1 overtime win over the MacEwan Griffins on Saturday night at Downtown Community Arena, extending their winning streak (4-0-0) behind another strong showing from goaltender Drew Sim.

Tyson Laventure potted the OT winner with 30 seconds left in the extra frame, which came after an Owen Pederson goal in the third period to level the game at 1-1. Sim finished with 27 saves for Alberta, while Eric Ward stopped 37 shots in a losing effort for MacEwan.

MacEwan struck first midway through the opening period. At 8:40, Kadyn Chabot buried a feed from Ethan Sundar, beating Sim to put the Griffins ahead 1–0. The goal energized the home side, who outshot Alberta 12–9 through 20 minutes. Both teams settled into a tight-checking rhythm from there, with neither able to capitalize on their first-period chances.

The second period featured a series of penalties but no scoring. MacEwan goaltender Eric Ward turned aside all 15 Alberta shots, while Sim was sharp at the other end, keeping the deficit at one. The Bears best chance came on a delayed penalty when Justin Hall's point shot deflected just wide, a sign of pressure that would build as the game wore on.

Alberta finally broke through in the third. At 7:47, with Ethan Mercer serving a double minor for high-sticking, Pederson converted on the power play, finishing a setup from Hall and Marcus Pacheco to tie the game 1–1. The Bears carried the momentum, outshooting the Griffins 13–5 in the frame. MacEwan pushed late, aided by a pair of Alberta penalties, but Sim stood tall, turning aside all five shots during the Griffins man-advantage opportunities.

Tied after regulation, the contest moved to overtime, where Alberta needed less than five minutes to complete the comeback. At 4:28, Laventure took a feed from Hall and slipped the puck past Ward for the game-winner — his second goal of the season — sealing a hard-fought 2–1 victory.

Alberta will now turn their attention to the UBC Thunderbirds, who they host next weekend at Clare Drake Arena.
