Game Recap: Golden Bears Hockey | | Connor Hood

Third period surge comes up short in Bears loss to MacEwan

Alberta suffers just fourth ever loss to MacEwan

EDMONTON - For just the fourth time ever, the MacEwan Griffins earned a win over the Golden Bears with a 4-3 victory on Friday night.

Ethan Sundar scored twice, including the game-winner midway through the third, to go along with an assist leading the Griffins to the win at Clare Drake Arena. Sean Comrie and Marc Pasemko also scored for the visitors, who jump over .500 (8-7-2) following their upset victory.

Aidan de la Gorgendiere, Alex Thacker, and Sean Tschigerl scored for Alberta (13-4-0), who outshot MacEwan 38-23, including a 16-3 margin in the third period in the loss.

All four of MacEwan's wins have come at Clare Drake Arena, with tonight being the Griffins first win over the Bears since October 7, 2022. Tonight's result also snapped the Bears 12-game win streak over MacEwan.

Eric Ward was terrific for MacEwan in net, turning aside 35 Alberta shots, including 15 in the third period as the Griffins faced an onslaught of shots and chances. Ethan Kruger made 19 saves on 23 shots, with the loss dropping his record to 7-2-0 on the season.

MacEwan, who never trailed on Friday night, opened the scoring just 88 seconds into the first period. A turnover from Justin Hall led to a three-on-one break, which was finished by Sundar.

de la Gorgendiere answered quickly for Alberta, jumping in off the rush and beating Ward with a quick snapshot far side.

In similar fashion, Pasemko restored the MacEwan lead with his seventh of the season midway through the second, beating his defender before snapping a wrister past Kruger from a tight angle.

Alberta, again, was quick to respond. Just over two minutes later, Thacker beat Ward with an A+ shot from the circle after an excellent cross-ice pass from Eric Florchuk.

The tie was extremley short-lived, as Comrie restored the Griffins lead after an unfortunate turnover from Kruger from behind his own net set gifted Sundar the puck, who fed Comrie in front.

A very well played first 40 minutes quickly turned into Alberta dominance in the third, but their strong possession and chances were negated by a Sundar breakaway goal 11:28 into the period, giving the visitors a two-goal lead.

Tschigerl's goal three minutes later was as close as Alberta would come, with Ward making a handful of key stops, followed by Josh Prokop missing an open look from the slot in the final seconds.

The Bears will visit MacEwan tomorrow night at 5:00 p.m. at the Downtown Community Arena.
