EDMONTON - Four different Pandas found the back of the net in an impressive 4-1 victory over the upstart Lethbridge Pronghorns Saturday afternoon at Foote Field.
It was a refreshing win for the Pandas who started the year with back-to-back losses against Regina and Saskatchewan where they scored just a single goal. The win raises their record to 1-2-0 in the early campaign, and will raise them from the basement of the division. Brooklyn St. Amand, Emily Duxbury, Makenna Van der Veen, and Tara Simonot all scored their first of the year in the match, while Chiara Duenser was the lone 'Horn on the scoresheet with her first of the campaign as well.
For the Pronghorns, who have started the year with an impressive two straight wins, the loss pushes them to 2-1-0 and a second place position in the Prairie division.
It was an impressive offensive performance from the Pandas who outshot the 'Horns 33-3, while putting 16 of those shots on target. Equally as impressive was the defensive effort as well when, coming into the contest, the visitors ranked third in the Canada West in goals per game with 3.50.Â
The Pandas exploded offensively just 21 minutes into the match, beginning with a foul in the box on second-year midfielder Simonot, who promptly finished from the spot for her first goal of the year to give the home side an early 1-0 lead. Just 7 minutes later Van der Veen tucked a missed pass past a diving Heidi Andres for her first as well as the Pandas went up 2-0 into the half.
Alberta held a strong 16-1 shot advantage at the half (10-0 on target) as they largely dominated the first 45. Andres was great between the sticks for the Horns, making eight saves in the first half and preventing a larger lead for the home side.
The Pandas offence did not stop at the break, as just thirty seconds into the second half Duxbury tucked home a beautiful curling strike off a great layup pass from Wanda Czebreszuk to make it 3-0 for the hosts. And while the Alberta backline consistently thwarted any Pronghorn attack from up-close, in the 66th minute Duenser struck an incredible ball from 30 yards out that beat a jumping Wynn to dissolve the deficit to just two. However, a Brooklyn St. Amand goal in the 78th minute from a great Alia Temple assist all but put the game away.
The Pandas stay home tomorrow with a noon matchup against the dangerous Calgary Dinos, while the Pronghorns travel across the river to face the MacEwan Griffins.
