EDMONTON - Captain
Josh Prokop scored the game-winner 37 seconds into overtime, giving the Alberta Golden Bears a much-needed 3-2 win over the UBC Thunderbirds.Â
Prokop beat UBC goalie Cole Schwebius with a one-timer on the powerplay from the left bumper for his 12th of the season.Â
Tyler Preziuso and Alex Thacker also scored for Alberta, with Ethan Kruger stopping 25 of the 27 UBC shots he faced to pick up his 9th win (9-6-0) of the season.Â
Jack Wismer and Cyle McBabb scored for UBC in the loss, with McNabb's marker late in the third period forcing overtime. Schwebius made 25 saves in the loss.Â
The win allows Alberta (17-7-2) to stay one point ahead of Saskatchewan for fourth place in the Canada West standings. The Huskies do, however, have two games in hand on the Bears with one week of regular season hockey remaining. Alberta has hosted at least one playoff game in every season since 1995, and will need to finish fourth or higher to continue that streak.Â
Earning a point in the loss, UBC now owns a three-point lead over both Mount Royal and Calgary for first place. A win for UBC next weekend against the MRU Cougars will clinch first place for the Thunderbirds.Â
Three goals were scored in an entertaining opening frame, with Wismer opening the scoring three minutes in with his 6th of the season. Preziuso and Thacker responded for Alberta, with the duo scoring five minutes apart to give the Bears a 2-1 lead through 20.Â
The Bears outshot UBC 13-5 in the second, but were unable to add to their lead.Â
After UBC tied the game up late, they gifted the Bears a powerplay that carried into overtime, as they were called for too many men with seven seconds left in regulation.Â
Alberta will visit the 2-21-1 Trinity Western Spartans next weekend to close out the regular season.Â
