Pandas struggle on Day 1 of UBC 7s Tournament

VANCOUVER - The UBC Thunderbirds and Victoria Vikes went a perfect 3-0 on the first day of the second stop of the Women's Canada West 7s series at Thunderbirds Stadium in Vancouver on Friday, February 9. The two BC rivals lead the six-team field, moving onto Saturday's final two matches as the top two sides.
 
The hosting Thunderbirds ran over 19 tries and kicked 11 conversions as they beat Trinity Western Spartans 43-0, Lethbridge Pronghorns 29-10, and Calgary Dinos 45-7.  Sarah MacPherson led the scoring for UBC with 30 points from six tries.
 
Victoria, who snapped UBC's 18-game unbeaten streak to win the first Canada West 7s series of 2024 in Edmonton last month, ran over 15 tries and kicked 11 conversions as they saw of Calgary Dinos 33-7, Trinity Western Spartans 31-7, and Alberta Pandas ?33-0. Maggie MacKinnon led the scoring for UVic, and overall on day one, with 33 points from three tries and nine conversions.
 
Trintiy Western Spartans and Lethbridge Pronghorns have one win apeice from their three games. TWU beat Lethbridge 15-10 for their victory while the Pronghorns got their win in their first match of the day, overcoming Alberta Pandas 19-7.
 
Calgary and Alberta played out an entertaining 10-10 draw in the inter-provincial battle to get their only points of the day on the board.
 
Saturday will feature the final two rounds of action to wrap up the round robin-style tournament. The action begins at 9.45 a.m. at Thunderbird Stadium.
