Game Recap: Golden Bears Basketball | | Connor Hood

Bears offence sputters in 66-51 loss to Winnipeg

Alberta falls to 3-4 with one game remaining in first half

EDMONTON – Donald Stewart finished with a game-high 15 points, with his Wesmen holding the Alberta Golden Bears to just 18 made shots in a 66-51 road win.

The U SPORTS No. 6 ranked Wesmen poured in 12 three-pointers in the win, which sees them stay perfect in conference play and improve to 6-0. Alberta made just 32% of their shots in the 15-point loss, which sees their record drop to 3-4.

Stewart added 10 rebounds for the double-double, and was aided by Shawn Maranan's 10 points.

Isaac Simon and Logan Powell led the Bears with 11 points each, however the duo combined to make just eight of their 26 shot attempts.

The Bears opened the first quarter hot, making five of their 11 attempts to take a 16-14 lead. The Bears led by as many as five, which was quickly erased by a five-point Winnipeg run to erase the quick start by the Bears.

Winnipeg ramped up their defence in the second quarter, putting a clamp on the Alberta offence. The Bears made just four shots on 17 attempts in the second, scoring just 11 points and falling behind by eight at the half. Maranan and Stewart combined for 18 points in the first half, with the Wesmen making half (7/14) of their shots from beyond the arc.

While the team's shooting numbers were nearly identical through three quarters, the Wesmen were much better at getting to the line, making 13 free throws through 30 minutes. Along with 10 made 3's through three quarters, the visitors held a 13-point lead.

After the Bears trimmed the lead down to seven with an 8-0 run, a Stewart three with less than four minutes to go ended the short-lived Alberta comeback bid.

The two sides will meet again tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. at Saville Community Sports Centre.
