Balanced Pronghorn attack overpowers Pandas 29-24 in Suggitt Cup grudge match

Five different Lethbridge scorers, four first half tries lead 'Horns to victory

EDMONTON - A balanced Lethbridge Proghorns attack that featured five different major scorers was too much for the Alberta Pandas to overcome as they fell 29-24 Saturday afternoon at Foote Field.

In addition to the win today, the Pronghorns also beat the Pandas earlier this year and thus clinched this years rendition of the Rick Suggitt Cup. Alberta won the Cup last year.

Tayah Perry, Molly Aellen, Charli Helland, Dori Miller, and Rebecca Powell scored the tries for the 'Horns, while Cassie Mann, Miranda Risling, Orlane Lemofouet, and Fiea Marsh were the major scorers for Alberta. Kate Alcock and Tory Clements both converted two kicks for the Pandas and Pronghorns, respectively.

Lethbridge also clinches the final playoff spot in the Canada West Championship with the win. Alberta, who needed not only a win but a large margin of victory, ends their 2024 campaign with a 2-4 record.

It was a tale of two halves for the Pronghorns, who came out firing in the first half en route to a 22-5 halftime lead. The scoring was actually opened in the fourth minute by the host Pandas on a Risling run, however, that would be all they would get in the opening 40 as Lethbridge took control from there. Four straight tries from Perry, Aellen, Miller, and Powell and some stellar defensive work mean the Pandas had their work cut out for them in making a comeback bid in the second half.

A valiant comeback effort was mounted by Alberta who saw second-half scores from Mann, Lemofouet, and Marsh, but a 19-point explosion was not enough to overcome the initial deficit. The 'Horns were able to lock up when it mattered, including stopping the Pandas on a long run to the goalline and reverting possession twice in the half. Helland scored in the 57th minute in what would be the deciding try.

Lethbridge heads back home for a end-of-season matchup with the Championship host Calgary Dinos next weekend.
