EDMONTON - Leading 30-4 early in the third quarter, Manitoba scores 26 unanswered points in the third and fourth quarters to force overtime. After
Carter Kettyle scored his record-tying fourth touchdown of the game to restore the Bears lead on the first possession of OT, Manitoba answered with a TD of their own, followed by a two-point convert by AK Gassama to earn the walk-off win.
Alberta led 22-4 at the half, with Kettyle scoring his third touchdown one minute into the third quarter to give the Bears a 26-point lead. Manitoba chipped away at the deficit, scoring a TD in the final minute of the third, followed by 20-straight points in the fourth quarter. Maya Turner made a 23-yard field goal with one second remaining to force OT.Â
The loss is the third-straight for Alberta, who drop to 2-5 in conference play. The win for Manitoba clinches a home playoff game for the Bisons, who improve to 6-1.Â
Kettyle's four touchdowns, which came in his first game of the season returning from injury, ties the Bears program record previously set by Tylor Henry in 2017. Second-year QB Cade Labrecque tossed for 355 yards on 20/35 passing, including a nine-yard TD pass to Kettyle in overtime.
Jackson Tachinski, who orchestrated the Bisons comeback, finished the game with 267 passing yards, one passing touchdown, and a team-high 186 rushing yards on 15 carries. 143 of his ground yards came in the second half on 10 carries, which included a 13-yard TD run in the fourth quarter. Breydon Stubbs added two rushing touchdowns for the Bisons; one late in the fourth quarter, and his second in overtime.
After losing the yardage battle 292-183 in the first half, Manitoba out-gained Alberta 416-175Â in the second half and overtime. Alberta managed just one first down in the fourth quarter, which led to a missed field goal from Jonathan Giustini. The Bears had 10 first downs in the second half, with three coming in overtime.Â
Matthew Peterson added 119 rush yards to his season total, averaging 10.8 yards per carry for the Bears. Alberta ran the ball 20 times, compared to 35 pass attempts. Stubbs carried the ball 22 times for the Bisons, who finished with 352 rushing yards on 45 carries. Stubbs added 134 yards to go along with his two touchdowns.Â
With Alberta, Calgary and Regina all losing in Week 7, all three teams can still secure the fourth and final playoff spot next week. Alberta will need a win at Regina coupled with a Calgary loss to Saskatchewan to leapfrog the Dinos. Manitoba will host the 5-2 UBC Thunderbirds to close out the regular season next Saturday, with a win or loss by less than 23 securing the No. 1 seed.Â
