Pandas offence sputters in 72-63 loss to Regina

Pandas shoot just 30%, are swept by Regina at home

EDMONTON - Three different Regina Cougars recorded double-digit points, led by 19 from Kianna Wiens, as the Cougars escaped Edmonton with a series sweep thanks to a 72-63 win on Saturday night.

Cara Misskey added 10 points for Regina, along with 11 from Jade Belemore, as Regina improves to 12-4 thanks to the pair of wins over Alberta.

Jenna Harpe led the Pandas with a game-high 21 points, but she made just four of her 17 shots in the loss. Nearly half (10) of Harpe's 21 points came from the free throw line. Jayden Tanner added 11 for Alberta, as she finished as the only Panda to make more than half her shot attempts (4/6). The sweep drops the Pandas to 10-6 in conference play.

In an extremely similar game to the one from the night prior, both team's offenses struggled on Saturday, with neither shooting over 32%. Regina did, however, finish with a 55-33 advantage on rebounds, including a 17-9 edge on the offensive glass, while also making 13 more free throws in the win.

Alberta's best quarter was the first, as they held a 20-15 lead through 10 minutes, and led by as many as 10. Regina rebounded in the second, outscoring Alberta 22-15 to take a two-point lead into the half.

Leading by the same margin through three quarters, the Cougars pulled away in the fourth, going 9/10 from the stripe to go along with five made shots, to outscore Alberta 21-14. Six of Wiens' 19 came in the fourth quarter, along with a pair of made shots from Belemore.

The Alberta Pandas will host their final conference series next weekend, the final time they will be at home before hosting the 2024 U SPORTS Championship presented by the Westin Edmonton, March 7-10 at Saville Centre.
