EDMONTON –
Wanda Czebreszuk scored a goal and added an assist to lead the Alberta Pandas to a 2-0 victory over the MacEwan Griffins Saturday afternoon at Foote Field.
It was a chilly day for the Edmonton Derby, which saw the Pandas move to 4-4-3 on the year with the win and sit comfortably in 4
th place in the Prairie Division. MacEwan drops to 7-2-1, but maintains their lead in the Prairie Division.
Autumn Wynn was also a standout for Alberta, as she stopped all nine MacEwan shots that came her way many of which where from dangerous spots.
The first half was quiet on a chilly Edmonton day7-2-1 but had prolonged spells of possession, but were unable to convert chances into goals. Alberta's keeper Wynn had a great half, parrying all four shots on target, while her counterpart Bianca Castillo stopped all two she faced. The game headed into the halfway mark knotted at 0.
It did not take long for the Pandas to break the tie after the half, when Czebreszuk won a penalty in the box and coolly struck it past Castillo for her fifth of the season to give Alberta a 1-0 lead.
After some MacEwan pressure, Wynn cleared a ball that ended up on the feet of a running Czebreszuk who set up the rookie Filipchuk to hit a long volley that perfectly beat Castillo under the crossbar for her first career CW goal – and a goal of the year candidate to boot. This would put the Pandas up 2-0.
Despite some intense Griffins pressure, including a point-blank shot from Alyx Henderson that found the gloves of Wynn in the 88
th minute, the home side would hold on for a huge 2-0 victory.
The teams return to action tomorrow for the second game in this series, which will be hosted at MacEwan.
