EDMONTON –
Prince Amanda scored the only Alberta Golden Bear goal as they drew 1-1 against their crosstown rivals the MacEwan Griffins Saturday afternoon at Foote Field.
The Bears were dominant at times in possession but could not sneak more than one past Griffins keeper Marko Ilich, who had a standout performance making six saves including one off a penalty.
Alberta moves to 5-1-2 on the campaign and sit comfortably in 2
nd place in the Prairie division. The Griffins bump to 2-5-1 and are a point back of the fifth-place Calgary Dinos.
The first 30 minutes were dominated by the home side, who peppered the net with shots that were the result of good pressure. The Bears would break the deadlock in the 32
nd minute, when a set piece led to an initial shot saved by the Griffins keeper Ilich but the rebound would go right to the boot of Amanda who made no mistake for his third goal of the year.
But while the home side certainly had control for the majority of the half, MacEwan was able to knot it up in the 45
th minute when Masri was able to slide one past Ezoua off a Jakob Sievert set piece for his fourth of the Canada West campaign.
The first 25 minutes were quiet in the second half, with both teams trading control of possession. A key moment occurred in the 76
th minute when Alberta's
David Chung lined up from the penalty spot because of a handball in the box. He shot to the right and Ilich was able to make a key diving stop to maintain the score at 1-1.
Masri had the best chance non-penalty chance of the second half in stoppage time, when he was sprung on a break and just missed the net to the left.
The teams will play again on Wednesday, a make up game for their meeting earlier this year being cancelled by smoke conditions.
