Herrera, Pandas throttle Dinos in season-opener

Second-year centre scores three tries in 54-5 Pandas win

EDMONTON - Second-year centre Bea Herrera recorded a career-high three tries, two of which coming off long runs in the second half, leading the Alberta Pandas to a dominant 54-5 win over Calgary on Friday night at Foote Field.

Shelby Pierce added a pair of tries herself, matching her team-leading output from the 2022 season. Cassie Mann, Amber Robertson-Grafton, and Bella Adatia also recorded tries for the Pandas, while Kate Manning made seven of her eight convert attempts.

The 49-point win is the Pandas largest margin of victory in a decade, dating back to a 79-0 win over UBC in the 2013 Canada West semifinal.

Madison Browett recorded the lone Dinos try in the 74th minute.

Alberta raced out to a 14-0 lead inside of seven minutes, with Mann and Pierce both finding the end zone. Pierce recorded her second try of the match in the 20th minute, capitalizing on dominant ball possession from Alberta.

Herrera (27th) and Grafton (40th) capped off a commanding first half with two more tries for Alberta.

The second half was more Herrera, as the dual-sport athlete used her blazing speed to race off to a pair of long try runs.

The Pandas will have a bye week, before heading on their BC road trip in two weeks. Calgary, meanwhile, will host the Lethbridge Pronghorns in the first of back-to-back meetings between the southern Alberta foes.
