A pair of Golden Bears heard their names called on Wednesday, as the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced the results of the 2023 CEBL U SPORTS Draft. 

Rookie Bear Isaac Simon was selected 16th overall by the Saskatchewan Rattlers, while fourth-year Bear Adam Paige was taken one pick later by the Edmonton Stingers. 

The 2023 CEBL Draft on Wednesday saw 10 CEBL franchises draft 20 student-athletes from 17 Canadian universities.

This is a coveted opportunity for top players in U SPORTS to get a taste of professional basketball by practicing and playing alongside veteran pro's from the NBA, NBA G League, Canadian National team, and top international leagues. U SPORTS athletes drafted will not lose their eligibly by participating in the CEBL. 

Paige led the Golden Bears with 14.3 points per game in 2022/23, adding 6.0 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 27.3 minutes per game. The veteran Bear was named the Canada West and U SPORTS Student-Athlete Community Service Award winner this spring, and spent the last two summers with the Fraser Valley (Vancouver) Bandits of the CEBL. 

Simon played in all 20 conference games for the Bears in 2022/23, starting in 13. The Regina product averaged 9.2 points and 4.0 rebounds per game as a freshman, and was named to the Canada West All-Rookie Team. 

The 2023 CEBL season tips off May 24th, with the Championship weekend taking place August 11-13 in Vancouver.
