Preziuso powers Bears to 7-0 win over Windsor

Alberta to play Calgary or UPEI in U SPORTS Semifinal

CHARLOTTETOWN (U SPORTS)—Tyler Preziuso went off for five points Friday afternoon as the Alberta Golden Bears cruised past the Windsor Lancers 7-0 to advance to the semifinals in the 2023 U SPORTS Cavendish Farms University Cup.

The sophomore forward recorded a hat trick and two assists to pace the Golden Bears, while Eric Florchuk had a goal and three assists. Nolan Volcan, Jakin Smallwood and Curtis Trolley also scored in the win.

Alberta wasted little time scoring 38 seconds into the game when Preziuso gathered the puck along the end boards and passed it in front to Volcan, who tapped it by goaltender Nathan Torchia.

Moments later, the Golden Bears took full advantage of a five-minute power play after Windsor's Robbie Burt received a game misconduct for contact to the head. It was a nightmarish five minutes for Torchia who allowed three goals in that stretch.

The floodgates opened at 1:52 when Florchuk beat Torchia far side, top corner after taking a short pass from Preziuso in the slot.

After setting up his teammates for the first two goals, Preziuso delivered with two of his own. At 4:06, the sophomore forward redirected Volcan's cross-ice pass to make it 3-0. Just twelve seconds later, he put away the easy rebound off a shot from Florchuk to extend the lead to 4-0.

Alberta tacked on another goal less than two minutes into the second period when Smallwood took the puck from the neutral zone and drove toward the net before slinging a wrist shot in the top right corner.

The Golden Bears took that 5-0 lead into the third period where they quickly scored again on another power play. Trolley took a pass from the side of the net, spun in front and put away the wrist shot to make it 6-0.

Preziuso recorded the hat trick at 12:04 on Alberta's fifth power play goal of the game.

Ethan Kruger turned aside 26 shots for the tournament's first shutout.
