Ward, Florchuk lead Bears to comeback win over MacEwan

Duo combine for three third-period goals in comeback win

EDMONTON - Trailing 3-2 after 40 minutes, the Golden Bears outshot MacEwan 11-1 in the third period, scoring thrice to earn a 5-3 win.

Defenceman Mason Ward scored both of his goals in the third, tying the game 11 minutes into the final frame, before icing the win with an empty-net goal in the final minute. Eric Florchuk scored the game-winner with just under four minutes remaining in regulation.

Alberta (11-4-2) finished with a 43-23 shot advantage in the win.

MacEwan (6-10-1) led 3-1 after the opening period, scoring three times on 15 shots in the frame. The visitors would only muster eight more shots for the rest of regulation, failing to add on to their early lead.

Ashton Abel kept MacEwan in the lead for a majority of the night, finishing with 38 saves in the loss. Ethan Kruger made 20 saves in the win for Alberta.

Ethan Strang scored twice for MacEwan in the first, to go along with Liam Hughes' first of the season. Abel made 13 saves in the opening 20, as the visitors stunned the home crowd with a two-goal lead.

Adam Hall cut the MacEwan lead in half, scoring his team-leading 10th of the season seven minutes into the second. Kruger stopped all seven Griffins shots he faced in the period.

Alberta turned on the gas in the third, completely dominating the period to secure the come-from-behind win.

The cross-town foes will meet again tomorrow, with MacEwan hosting at 5:00 p.m. at the Downtown Community Arena.
