VANCOUVER – UBC completed a six-play, 95-yard touchdown drive in the final minute of regulation, capped off by a 13-yard Sam Davenport touchdown and Kieran Flannery-Fleck convert, to capture the 86
th Hardy Cup with a 28-27 win over the Alberta Golden Bears.
UBC forced an Alberta fumble with 52 seconds left on their own 15-yard line, with a 63-yard completion from Garrett Rooker to Shemar McBean flipping the field and setting up the walk-off touchdown.
Alberta held a 10-point lead after three quarters, with UBC outscoring Alberta 14-3 in the fourth to capture their 16
th Hardy Cup title, and first since 2015. UBC will now host the St. FX X-Men in the U SPORTS Uteck Bowl next Saturday in Vancouver, with the winner advancing to the Hardy Cup.
Trailing 14-0 after the first quarter, Alberta scored 21-straight points in the second and third quarters to take a 21-14 lead into the final frame. Leading 27-21 and the ball on the UBC 15, Bears quarterback
Eli Hetlinger coughed up the ball to allow the UBC game-winning drive.
Alberta forced six UBC turnovers, including three fumbles and two interceptions, but were unable to capitalize with touchdowns on shortened fields throughout the final. Hetlinger finished with 149 yards on 12/21 passing and three touchdowns, but also committed a pair of fumbles that led to UBC touchdowns.

Carter Kettyle each finished with a receiving touchdown in the loss. Canada West Player of the Year
Matthew Peterson finished with 102 yards on 22 carries, with most of his yards coming in the second half.
UBC jumped out to a two-TD lead in the opening quarter, with Derek Engel capping off a 91-yard drive with a two-yard TD run, before a strip sack in the Alberta endzone leading to a Ryan Baker defensive major.
Alberta stormed back with 17 unanswered points in the second, with McKay and Thomas receiving TD's and a
Jonathan Giustini field goal giving the visitors a three-point halftime lead.
A 12-yard Kettyle TD midway through the third gave Alberta a 10-point lead.
An Edgerrrin Williams 11-yard TD reception early in the fourth quarter gave UBC life, trimming the Alberta lead to three. Despite forcing three fumbles and securing an interception in the second half, Alberta was unable to grow their lead, with a Giustini field goal with four minutes left their only points of the fourth quarter.
With a field goal likely icing a Bears win, Taaj Jhooty's forced fumble in the final minute set up the improbable comeback UBC win.
