EDMONTON - Four combined points from Pandas
Jadynn Morden and
Madison Willan powered Alberta to a 2-1 home win over the Mount Royal Cougars on Saturday night.Â
Both Morden and Willan scored for the victorious Pandas, with
Halle Oswald stopping 22 shots to pick up her third win of the season. The win gives Alberta the weekend sweep over the Cougars, improving their record to 3-1-0 early in 2023/24.Â
With two points on Saturday, Willan has now recorded a point on six of the Pandas nine goals this season, with her six points tied for the conference lead through two weeks. Morden's four goals are also tied for tops in Canada West.Â
Kiana McNinch scored the lone MRU goal late in the third period in a losing effort. Kaitlyn Ross made 14 saves for a Cougars team who drops to 2-2-0 after the back-to-back losses.Â
Willan found Morden for the game's first goal midway through the first, with Ross having no chance with the cross-crease feed on the powerplay.Â
Willan then doubled the Alberta lead midway through the second, beating Ross with a gorgeous wrister from the left circle.Â
While Mount Royal finished with a 23-16 shot advantage on Saturday, they lacked high-quality scoring chances. Oswald was up to the task on the scoring chances the Cougars did generate.Â
McNinch's tally was too little to late for the Cougars.Â
Both teams will play in home-and-home series' next weekend, with Alberta taking on MacEwan, and MRU battling Calgary.Â
