Game Recap: Golden Bears Football | | Connor Hood

Bears offence stalls in 23-10 loss to UBC

Alberta finishes 2nd, will host Saskatchewan next Saturday

EDMONTON - Isaiah Knight rushed for 128 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries, adding 31 receiving yards, leading the #10 ranked UBC Thunderbirds to a 23-10 road win over the #6 ranked Alberta Golden Bears.

In bitterly cold and windy temperatures at Foote Field, UBC finished with a 102-yard advantage on offence, holding the Bears to just 261 yards in the loss. The Week 9 win gives UBC (6-2) the No. 1 seed in Canada West, while Alberta (6-2) slides down to the No. 2 spot. UBC will host the Manitoba Bisons (3-5) in the first Hardy Cup semifinal next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. PST, followed by Alberta hosting Saskatchewan (5-3) at 5:00 p.m. MST.

UBC's ground game, combined with Alberta's inability to move the ball efficiently was the difference on Saturday. The Bears mustered just 13 first downs on offence, turning the ball over three times.

Eli Hetlinger finished the game 14/22 passing for 85 yards, with neither a touchdown nor interception.

By comparison, Garrett Rooker seemed to have no issue with the conditions, tossing for 167 yards on 18/26 passing, adding one touchdown.

Matthew Peterson ran for 101 yards on 15 carries —his sixth game with over 100 ground yards — finishing his season with a conference-best 1,128 rushing yards.

Cesare Rednour-Bruckman was the recipient of Rooker's TD pass in the opening quarter, as UBC raced out to a 10-1 lead after the opening quarter, and a 16-4 lead at the half.

Kieran Flannery-Fleck went 3/3 on his field goal attempts, all of which came in the opening half.

Fourth-year Bear Jonathan Giustini accounted for all 10 of Alberta's points, going 3/3 on field goal attempts, and adding a single on the opening kickoff. Giustini finished the season as the Bears all-time recorder holder in career points (270) and field goals (58), as well as single season field goals (22). His 95 points this season are second only to Brian Fryer's 98 from 1974.

While never trailing by more than 13, a Bears comeback never seemed viable for a majority of the game. Stalled drives, dropped and incomplete passes, and a penetrating Thunderbirds defensive line nullified any Alberta comeback bid. A third down defensive stop inside the final four minutes of the fourth quarter iced the UBC win.
