Pandas capture second-straight CW bronze

Pandas finish season with 5-0 record against provincial opponents

LETHBRIDGE - Kate Manning records four penalty goals, to go along with a try from Halle Walters in the 16th minute, as the Pandas Rugby team captured their second-straight Canada West bronze medal on Sunday afternoon in Lethbridge.

The Pandas finished the season with a perfect 5-0 record against provincial opponents, including a 3-0 mark against Lethbridge.

The UBC Thunderbirds defeated the Victoria Vikes 10-0 to capture their fourth-straight conference title.

To start the match, Pronghorns made a march deep into Alberta's zone putting pressure on higher seed Pandas in the 10th minute of the game but were unable to cross the line turning it over to the Pandas. Alberta followed up by going on a promising run up the sideline, but the Horns were able to bring down the Pandas offence.

In the 16th minute of the game the Pandas opened the scoring, as Halle Walters earned the try. A penalty goal from Kate Manning in the 13th minute made it 8-0 for the Pandas. Lethbridge made their mark on the scoreboard in the 30th minute, as Jada Holtkamp crossed the line for the Horns, while Verity Fex could not complete the convert for the Horns. A second penalty goal for Alberta came three minutes following, as Kate Manning completed the kick to make the score 11-5 for Alberta as they ended the first half.

Kate Manning kicked for another goal to start the second half, completing the penalty kick to add to Alberta's lead. In the 46th minute, a penalty on Alberta's tackle on Brooklyn Perry gave the Pronghorns the advantage, allowing the Horns to make a march deep into Pandas' territory. Horns maintained control and were able to get within scoring distance but came up short in the opportunity to earn the try as the ball was dropped, turning it over to the Pandas.

Pronghorns fought for every inch but were unable to control the momentum of the game, with the conditions and slipper ball adding to the challenge, but despite their best effort down the stretch they couldn't break the Pandas.
